WHY THIS ONE

Four things that decide whether you use it twice

Nearly everyone who gives up on a stretcher does it for the same reason: they started on the highest setting, it hurt, and it went in the cupboard.

Three heights, so you can start gentle
The stepped base sets how deep the arch is. Beginning on the lowest and moving up over a couple of weeks is the difference between using this daily and giving up after one uncomfortable go.
Lower back or neck, same device
Lie the arch under the small of your back for a lumbar stretch, or slide it up so the moulded cradle takes the back of your head instead. Two positions, one thing to store.
You lie down and do nothing
Your own body weight is the force. Nothing to hold, pump or switch on, which is why this gets used on evenings when a powered device stays in the cupboard.
Raised contact points
The nodes across the surface concentrate pressure along the muscles either side of the spine instead of spreading it flat across the whole arch.

HOW TO USE IT

Three steps, and two minutes is a full session

  1. 1

Set it to the lowest arch

On the floor or a firm surface, not a soft mattress β€” a mattress swallows the arch and you get nothing out of it. Start on the shallowest setting whatever you think your back can handle.

  2. 2

    Lie back slowly

For the lower back, sit the arch under the small of your back with your knees bent and your feet flat. For the neck, slide it up so the moulded cradle holds the back of your head. Lower yourself down rather than dropping onto it.

  3. 3

Two minutes, then get up slowly

Two to three minutes is a full session at the start. Roll onto your side to get up rather than sitting straight forward, and stop immediately if you feel dizzy or anything sharp.

Build up slowly over weeks rather than days. If any session leaves you sore rather than loose, drop back a setting.

IN USE

Where it earns its place

After a day sitting down
For the lower back that has been folded into an office chair since nine in the morning.
On the floor at home
Two minutes on a mat, which is a low enough bar to actually do daily.
Under the neck instead
Same device, slid up so the cradle takes your head β€” for the days it is the neck rather than the back.
At the office
Light enough to keep in a drawer or a gym bag, and it needs no power.

SAFE USE

Read this part properly

This holds your spine in a stretched position under your own body weight. Done gently it is fine; rushed, it is the kind of thing that leaves you worse than you started.

Before you use it

  • Start on the lowest arch and at two to three minutes. Going straight to the highest setting is how people hurt themselves with these.
  • Stop at once if you feel dizzy, light-headed, sick, or any tingling or numbness in your arms, hands or legs.
  • Do not use it after a recent back or neck injury or surgery, or if you have a disc problem, osteoporosis, spinal stenosis or arthritis in the spine, without clearance from a healthcare professional.
  • Get up by rolling onto your side. Sitting straight up from a stretched position is the part people get wrong.
  • Use it on a flat, firm surface, and never fall asleep on it.

This is a stretching aid, not a medical device, and not the clinical traction equipment that shares the name. It does not treat disc problems, sciatica, trapped nerves or any diagnosed spinal condition. Back or neck pain that persists, or that runs into an arm or a leg, belongs with a healthcare professional.

BEFORE YOU ORDER

Questions people ask

Is this for the back or for the neck?

Both, and it is worth being clear because the listing photos show both. The manufacturer type-plate calls it a manual back stretcher, and most of the photos show it under the small of the back. The moulded cradle at one end means you can also slide it up and rest your neck on it. Same object, two positions.

How long should I lie on it?

Two to three minutes at the start, working up to five or ten over several weeks if it stays comfortable. Longer is not better β€” the spine is not a muscle that rewards being stretched for half an hour.

It felt uncomfortable. Am I doing it wrong?

Usually the arch is set too high, or it is under the wrong part of you. Drop it to the lowest setting and move it so it sits under the small of the back with your knees bent. A gentle stretch is right; a sharp pain never is.

What do the magnets do?

Nothing we are going to claim. There are magnets set into the centre strip because the manufacturer put them there, and there is no good evidence that static magnets do anything for pain or muscle tension. What this product does is hold your back in a stretch β€” that part is real.

Is this a medical device?

No, and the manufacturer states that on its own spec panel. It is a stretching aid, not the traction equipment a clinician prescribes. It does not treat disc problems, sciatica, trapped nerves or any diagnosed spinal condition. If a professional has given you a back programme, ask them before adding this to it.

How does the multi-buy discount work?

It comes off on its own at checkout, with no code to type. Two items anywhere in your basket take 10% off, three take 15%, four take 20%. They do not have to be the same product.

When will it arrive?

Orders are dispatched within 1–2 business days and usually arrive within 7–12 business days after that; tracking is emailed as soon as the parcel leaves. If it is not for you, unused items can be returned within 30 days β€” email us first for the return address.
